Dr. Settles, a district staff member who presented the item, told the board that Fauble was placed on administrative leave on March 25, 2025 and that the Douglas County Sheriff's Office delivered a letter to him on March 26 stating the board would consider contract cancellation. Dr. Settles said Fauble did not request the hearing allowed by statute within seven days after receiving notice. The district also notified the Nebraska Department of Education of Fauble’s arrest on the same day, she said.
The board adopted a resolution that read, in part, that the district had complied with statutory and policy requirements and that “Jeffrey Fauble’s employment contract be canceled effective immediately.” The motion was made by Mr. Lotus and seconded by Miss Wood; the board recorded unanimous votes to carry the motion.
Board members and staff described steps the district had taken since the leave, including notifying state officials and meeting with the district’s background-check vendor to review procedures. Dr. Settles described the district’s hiring and onboarding checks — including statewide and national criminal records, sex-offender registry, abuse registry searches, and Social Security/name verification — and said the district would use the incident to examine and strengthen processes.
The board discussed only general aspects of the hiring and vetting process in open session; Dr. Settles said any discussion specific to the employee would require closed session. The board did not conduct a closed-session vote on the contract cancellation during the public meeting.
The board’s action will allow the district to file a final complaint with the Nebraska Department of Education regarding an alleged violation of professional practice, district staff said.
The board adjourned its public meeting after completing its agenda; no further action on this administrative matter was reported at the meeting.
