Councilmember Ou Hodgins asked management for details on the county-wide cesspool audit being performed by Brown & Caldwell and the committee received a program-level status update.
Hodgins asked how the audit and required conversions will be monitored and when the county must act. Management replied that the county is completing an audit of county-owned cesspools and that the county is required to phase out cesspools by a statutory deadline referenced in the discussion. "We have been doing and completing the countywide cesspool audit. This is for county owned properties that have cesspools and as you know, we're required to phase those out by 02/1950," a management representative said on the record (transcript phrasing as spoken at the hearing).
Staff told the committee they will identify key locations and prepare CIP requests to fund conversions at county facilities that need engineering work. Members emphasized the need to accelerate work on large-capacity systems rather than wait for long-term phase-out schedules.
Why this matters Cesspools and septic-system conversions have environmental and public-health implications; large-capacity systems serving county facilities often require engineering and capital funding and can become urgent compliance matters if not addressed in a timely way.
Ending Management said it will return with CIP proposals and that work on county facilities is being prioritized for funding and construction planning.
