Safe and Sound, the Youth Commission’s operating partner, told commissioners on April 9 that it will lead targeted recruitment for upcoming Youth Commission vacancies, focusing outreach through neighborhood organizers in Milwaukee Public Schools and peer referrals.
The staff update said recruitment will prioritize correct district placement during application vetting and that outreach will ramp up over the summer, including at a Safe and Sound summer kickoff and within school sites. Commissioners who are transitioning out of seats were encouraged to recruit peers to apply.
Commissioners were also reminded of two upcoming events. A Take-a-Child-to-Work event was announced for a Thursday in April 2025 with a schedule noted in the meeting as 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; assistance with setup at 8 a.m. and cleanup until 2:30 p.m. was requested and the meeting listed the location as Borner Botanical Gardens in Hales Corners. The commission also discussed a spring retreat scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; staff said lunch will be provided and requested commissioners RSVP.
Safe and Sound staff and commission advisers said peer referrals and school-based outreach have been effective recruitment tools. No specific target counts for applicant pools were provided during the update.
