Carbondale receives Arbor Day Foundation growth award; Tree Board plans Arbor Day planting and EAB removals

Carbondale — Town tree staff told the Carbondale Tree Board on March 20 that the Town of Carbondale has received a growth award from the Arbor Day Foundation and that the board should plan an Arbor Day proclamation and a public planting event.
Carl (town arborist) said he submitted points to the Arbor Day Foundation for emerald ash borer (EAB) planning, tree‑planting work and tree protection, and confirmed the award. He proposed holding the town’s traditional Arbor Day celebration at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3, with a planting in the green space along Greystone Drive to replace two removed ash trees. “I’m proposing that’s where we do our Arbor Day planting,” Carl said. He added the town is coordinating receipt of about 27 trees from the Colorado Tree Coalition expected in April.
Separately, Carl reported ongoing work to remove ash trees on Keeter Road as part of EAB management and said the town will coordinate locates, stump grinding and replacement planning with the HOA in that neighborhood. He also said he is coordinating phase‑one EAB management for the RVR area and advised the board that contractor maintenance for newly planted beds — at least for the first three years — would likely be the most reliable approach.
Community events and outreach: The board discussed participating in Dandelion Day and operating a public table with tree‑drawing activities; members asked that the group coordinate logistics and supply lists at least a week in advance. The board also discussed the town mayor making an Arbor Day proclamation and publicizing the Arbor Day Foundation award in the town newsletter.
Timing and next steps: The board tentatively set the Arbor Day event for May 3 and asked staff to pursue formal inclusion of the proclamation on the trustees’ agenda. Carl said he will follow up with the town clerk to schedule the proclamation and circulate details to board members. Several board members noted possible calendar conflicts for the board’s mid‑May meeting and asked staff to consider skipping the April/May meeting cycle if necessary to accommodate events.
