Members of the council reported on the budget subcommittee’s work and said they reviewed the police, community development and administrative services budgets while the subcommittee continues department-by-department review.
Council members cautioned that state pension fund performance and swings in the market could affect the city’s budget if pension obligations increase. The mayor and other members said the subcommittee is monitoring potential changes at the state and federal levels that could create a “waterfall effect” on city finances. Staff said the city will finalize budget numbers in June.
Council and staff also discussed MeasureX and a business license tax enacted by voters; the city manager said staff are preparing communications to businesses about the MeasureX/business-license changes and that economic development subcommittee members are meeting on implementation steps.
No formal budget adoption occurred at the meeting; the council continues review work ahead of the June budget finalization.
