The Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 Board of Education proclaimed April 27–May 3, 2025, as Head Start Appreciation and Acknowledgement Week, recognizing the 60th anniversary of the federal Head Start program and local program services.
Board President Kristen Bridal read the proclamation and thanked Head Start staff for their work. “Thank you to all of you for all the work you do every day, your die hard dedication to our students,” Bridal said during the recognition.
The proclamation states that Head Start began in 1965 under President Lyndon B. Johnson and notes that Manhattan was one of the original demonstration sites. According to the text read to the board, Manhattan’s Head Start program serves 138 infants, toddlers and preschoolers in Riley County and employs about 120 staff members, operating through a braided funding model under Manhattan–Ogden USD 383 as the grantee.
Elizabeth, representing Head Start program staff, invited families and community members to open houses at the district’s early learning centers on Wednesday, April 30, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., saying the events would include family-friendly activities and information for families interested in the early learning program.
The board attached the district seal to the proclamation and posed for a photograph with program representatives.
Background: Head Start is a federal early-childhood program created in 1965. The board’s proclamation highlights local program participation, staff counts and a community open-house schedule as part of the district’s celebration.
