Colorado Military Academy seeks local authorization from D11; board to consider transfer application in May

Colorado Military Academy executive director Nicole Roberts and school principals presented to the District 11 board on April 16 as part of the charter transfer application process. The presentation outlined the school’s mission, recent administrative changes, academic improvement strategies and financial status.
Roberts described the school’s military education model and STEM focus, emphasizing the school’s civil air patrol program and student leadership opportunities. She said CMA is not a military recruiting pipeline but aims to provide structure, discipline, and post‑graduation pathways in aerospace and other fields.
The presentation acknowledged past operational and performance challenges. Roberts said a major issue last year was an administrative coding error in testing participation that reduced the school’s participation rate from a level that would have met required thresholds. CMA reported that it has since put stronger safeguards and procedures into place for testing and data coding, raised teacher pay, hired intervention staff, strengthened curriculum alignment and instituted classroom coaching.
Doctor Comfort, the district representative, told the board that CMA’s financial metrics have improved significantly and that the school is self‑funding some capital items. He said district staff reviewed CMA’s materials and that the District Advisory Committee (DAC) review would be provided to the board by the end of the week.
Board members asked for additional documentation and follow-up: a current budget and raw financial documents, updated academic detail (percent on grade level by ELA and math, cohort progress), and the share of CMA students who are D11 boundary residents. District staff said those materials were provided to the district and that they will distribute a fuller package to the board prior to the May action item. The board indicated the transfer application is scheduled for action at the May 7 meeting; several directors said they may visit the school before then.
