Board approves $1.81 million MLO-funded intercom upgrade for elementary and middle schools

The Colorado Springs School District 11 Board of Education approved a motion on April 16 to purchase intercom systems for all district elementary and middle school classrooms, a one-time order the district said will cost $1,809,500 and must be delivered by June 30, 2025.
Chief Otto, accompanied by IT and procurement staff, told the board the purchase is funded with MLO dollars and will modernize aging systems that have dead spots and are increasingly unsupported. “Some of [the existing systems] are relics and should be in a museum,” Chief Otto said, noting the new systems will integrate with safety protocols and improve crisis communications.
The motion as stated at the dais read: “I move that the board of education approves the 1 time purchase of $2,350 intercom systems totaling $1,809,500 with a delivery date of no later than 06/30/2025.” The motion was moved and seconded and passed on roll call.
District staff said the priority is a speaker in every classroom; additional units may be installed in common areas and hallways as needed. IT project manager Tom Hunt said the devices include microphones and can be monitored to improve response in incidents and during shelter-in-place events.
Ending: The board’s vote authorizes the district to proceed with procurement and installation; installation work will start immediately and continue into the next school year.
