Parents, students urge Sierra Vista board to include and support teachers; student pleads to keep Carmichael teacher

Speakers during the board's public comment period urged the governing board to empower and involve classroom teachers in district decision making and asked the board to avoid actions that would cause teachers to leave their positions.

Molly Norton, a parent and volunteer with eight years of children in the district, said teachers serve as “mentors, counselors, coaches, club sponsors, advocates, and importantly, community builders,” and argued that excluding teachers from decisions wastes the most informed voices in schools. Norton said broad community and family involvement strengthens schools and urged the board to prioritize retaining teachers.

Olivia Lopez, a parent who recently moved to Sierra Vista, spoke with her daughter during public comment. Her daughter, Damaris (Demarius) Lopez, a Carmichael student, addressed the board and asked the district not to “ruin someone's life just to fit the budget,” saying her teacher, identified in comments as Miss Ortiz, has built community in the classroom and is a positive role model. Damaris said she and others would be upset if the teacher left and asked the board to pursue alternatives to staffing cuts or pay reductions that would push teachers out.

Board members acknowledged the comments but did not respond during public comment, consistent with the board's stated practice. The remarks were recorded under the board's public comment agenda item; no immediate policy action was taken during the meeting.
