Bill would create legislative committee to assess state agency data formats and sharing
Summary
House Bill 598 seeks to form a legislative study committee of lawmakers and subject-matter experts to inventory and recommend improvements to data formats and sharing across state agencies. Representative Carol McGuire (Merrimack District 27) introduced House Bill 598, which would establish a committee—primarily of legislators—to examine data the state already collects, assess formats and security, and recommend ways to make data more useful and accessible to agencies, auditors and the public.
McGuire told the committee the chairing legislators include members with experience in data analysis and computer science and cited past problems such as the Prescription Drug Affordability Board’s difficulties obtaining insurer data. She said the commission would review existing agency data and formats to improve interoperability while protecting personally identifiable information.
Committee members asked whether space limitations or the upcoming legislative session calendar (noted as “L.O.V.” in discussion) would impede the committee’s work; McGuire said remote work and scattered conference spaces across state agencies should be sufficient and that the committee’s members are comfortable meeting remotely.
No amendments were proposed at the hearing; the committee closed the hearing without final action recorded.
