Mayor London Breed and Supervisor Norman Yee announced plans to introduce a $500 million affordable‑housing bond measure that would allocate funds across categories intended to expand and preserve housing affordability.
Supervisor Yee outlined the proposed allocation framework during new‑business introductions: $150 million for public housing, $210 million for very‑low/low‑income housing, $30 million for affordable‑housing preservation, $20 million for middle‑income housing and $90 million for senior housing, totaling $500 million. Yee said community co‑chairs and stakeholder working groups had helped draft categories and that the measure was intended to treat housing as infrastructure that requires ongoing capital investment.
Yee said the package does not solve the city’s needs alone but is a substantial step and that he and the mayor intend to include affordable housing as a recurring bond category in future multi-year planning. The introduction was a first step; the measure will need formal drafting, approval for a ballot placement, and voter approval if it proceeds.
