Mayor London Breed told the San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Oct. 16 that the city will step in to cover a roughly $25 million budget shortfall at the San Francisco Housing Authority so that the authority can meet Section 8 voucher obligations through the end of 2018.
Breed said the shortfall exceeds the assistance HUD can provide and that, without city intervention, vouchers and housing payments could fail. "I'm committed right now that not a single person will lose their home because of the funding deficit," Mayor London Breed told the board during a scheduled policy discussion on housing.
Breed described the gap as a "crisis of accountability" and said the size and timing of the shortfall reflect "serious financial mismanagement" at the Housing Authority. She said the city would impose "best practices for management and oversight protocols" at the authority and would continue to work with HUD and planned operators to transfer two remaining Housing Authority properties, Sunnydale and Potrero…
