Supervisor Ronan introduces ordinance to accept temporary gift of 1515 South Van Ness for Mission navigation center

Supervisor Hillary Ronan introduced an ordinance on April 25, in partnership with Mayor Ed Lee, to allow the City to accept 1515 South Van Ness as a temporary gift from Lennar Multifamily Communities and use the site as a navigation center focused on addressing tent encampments in the Mission.

Ronan described the Mission as among the neighborhoods most affected by the city's homeless crisis and said the temporary site would offer an option for individuals living in tent encampments. She said the site would be available for roughly nine months while long-term affordable and supportive housing solutions are developed on other sites.

Ronan thanked community organizations and Lennar for the settlement agreement provisions that made the temporary use possible and acknowledged multiple city departments and staff who have been coordinating on the plan, including the Mayor's Office of Housing, Department of Public Works (Mohammad Nuru was mentioned during remarks), the Office of Homelessness and Supportive Housing, and mayoral staff. She said the navigation center is a Mission-specific response and urged other supervisors to welcome similar local navigation centers in their districts.

Ending: The ordinance introduction begins the formal municipal process to accept the temporary gift and to authorize the use of 1515 South Van Ness as a navigation center. Final authorization will require the ordinance to be scheduled for committee and subsequent action by the board.
