Board approves modified Lennar project at 1515 South Van Ness after settlement; item 24 approved, 23 and 25 filed/tabled

After settlement between Lennar Urban Communities and appellants, Supervisor Ronan moved to approve the Planning Department's community-plan-exemption determination for a proposed project located at 1515 South Van Ness (item 24) and to file (table) the related items 23 and 25. Supervisor Peskin seconded. Ronan and other speakers described negotiated improvements to the project, including affordable-housing commitments and community benefits.
Members of the Building and Construction Trades Council and labor-union representatives spoke in support, saying the project would be built union and create apprenticeship and career-path opportunities. Danny Campbell of Sheet Metal Workers Local 104 and other union speakers thanked Lennar for early commitments to local-hire and union construction, and said the project would include 100 percent union construction.
Opponents and some community members urged rejection or additional conditions, citing displacement, prior contractor conduct, and concerns that a settlement did not go far enough to protect long-term residents. A public commenter reported historical concerns about Lennar’s practices in other communities. The Board approved item 24 and tabled item 25; the clerk recorded the roll-call vote as unanimous (11 ayes).
