The San Francisco Board of Supervisors on June 7 approved a resolution declaring the intent to order the vacation of portions of Jesse Street and a portion of Eliam Alley northwest of Mission and First Streets, in connection with the Oceanwide Center project at 50 First Street. The board also set the hearing date for interested persons.
Supervisor Peskin explained his dissent before the roll call: “I just rise to let everybody know why I am dissenting in this vote. And that is because I think it is terrible planning policy to abandon our streets and alleys,” he said, referencing historic planning critiques and arguing against abandoning public rights of way.
Vote and process: The clerk recorded a roll-call vote of 10 ayes and 1 no, with Supervisor Peskin the lone dissent; the resolution was adopted.
Why it matters: Street vacations transfer or alter public rights of way and are a prerequisite to private development plans that physically close or reconfigure streets and alleys. The dissent highlighted planning concerns about abandoning publicly owned circulation space.
Next steps: The resolution sets the hearing process required for final action on the proposed vacation; interested parties will have the opportunity to submit comment at the scheduled hearing.
