Board urges federal pause on deportations and expansion of DACA; adopts resolution

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Jan. 31 adopted a resolution urging the federal government to suspend further deportations of undocumented immigrants, expand the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to more eligible participants and end employer audits and firings tied to immigration enforcement.
Supervisor David Chiu, who led the item with several cosponsors, said the measure reflects the city’s sanctuary values and responds to what he and other supervisors described as a humanitarian crisis of families separated by deportations. Speakers from labor unions and immigrant-rights groups addressed the board and urged immediate action; the labor representatives noted tens of thousands of local workers and families affected by enforcement.
Supervisor John Campos and others thanked young “DREAMer” speakers who testified and said an executive speech by the president that evening did not substitute for immediate administrative relief. The board took the item without objection and urged the president to take executive steps to limit deportations while federal legislative reform proceeds.
The resolution asks the federal government to extend DACA protections and halt workplace enforcement actions that remove workers while broader reform is pending.
