Board passes first reading on ordinance requiring bottle-filling stations in new buildings

President Chiu said the measure aims to expand access to San Francisco's tap water and reduce waste from single-use plastic bottles. She noted existing installations at schools, the airport and some recreation facilities and described drinking-tap stations as "a first of its kind in the country" proposal to broaden public access to refillable water.
Chiu proposed a technical amendment to change the accessibility standard from the Americans with Disabilities Act to California Title 24, because the Department of Building Inspection enforces the state rather than federal building code. The board approved the technical amendment (motion by President Chiu, seconded by Supervisor Mar) and took the ordinance on first reading without objection.
Supervisor Mar asked to be added as a cosponsor and Supervisor Marr and others expressed support for expanding refill infrastructure and reducing plastic waste.
