The San Francisco Board of Supervisors on June 4 adopted a resolution authorizing the city to acquire a parcel at 386120Fourth Street for approximately $4.2 million to create permanent open space in Noe Valley.
Supervisor Weiner described the purchase as "the culmination of many years of incredible work" by neighborhood volunteers and said the lot is "where the weekly Saturday Noe Valley Farmers Market has occurred for about a decade." He told the board that the market grew from a grassroots effort after a neighborhood grocery closed and that local residents raised roughly $500,000 in private commitments to help preserve the site.
The resolution uses the city's Open Space acquisition fund to purchase the site and was adopted without objection. Supervisor Farrell and others spoke in support of the measure, citing the neighborhood effort and the lack of plazas on the Noe Valley commercial corridor.
The purchase aims to preserve the market's role as a neighborhood town square and prevent the parcel from being sold for private development. No specific timetable for transfer or construction of park improvements was given during the discussion; funding commitments from the neighborhood were described as already in hand.
The board approved the resolution by unanimous voice vote (adopted without objection).
