Board refers $657,000 supplemental for Public Defender salaries back to Budget Committee

The Board of Supervisors voted on April 2 to refer to the Budget Committee an ordinance that would appropriate approximately $657,000 from the General Fund Reserve to cover salary expenditures for the San Francisco Public Defender in fiscal year 2012–13.
Supervisor David Campos introduced the item and moved to send it back to committee. Members said the Budget Committee had been divided on the supplemental and that further discussion was needed with the Public Defender’s Office, the Mayor’s Budget Office and the Controller. "I am highly doubtful that there would be anything close to the 8 votes to approve the supplemental today," Supervisor Scott Wiener said, and he said he would not support it in its current form but wanted more hearings and discussion. Supervisor Campos and other members indicated the city will likely have to fund the spending at some point, but wanted a committee forum to resolve outstanding budget and oversight questions.
Without objection, the board referred the item back to the Budget Committee for additional hearings and negotiation.
