Mayor says Sixth Street substation construction finishing; police move-in expected in February

Mayor Edwin Lee told the Board of Supervisors the Sixth Street substation in the South of Market/Central Market area will be completed soon, with construction work finishing by the end of the month and a police move-in anticipated in February.

"Construction will be complete by the end of this month, and as soon as the building receives the necessary inspections, the police department can begin the move in process, and we will look at the month of February," Lee said during a question-and-answer session with supervisors.

The mayor described the substation as more than a place for officers to file reports: "The goal is to have a critical staff outside interacting with the community ... a central market public safety station for other agencies as well, such as the community ambassadors," Lee said. He said the facility will support the administration's "interrupt, predict, and organize" public safety strategy by positioning officers and safety staff closer to the neighborhood.

Why it matters: The substation has been a focus of neighborhood advocacy and is tied to the revitalization of Central Market and South of Market. The mayor's timeline gives neighborhood groups and the police department a near-term target for operational planning and community outreach.
