Supervisor David Campos introduced an ordinance on May 1 to create a San Francisco wage-theft task force to develop recommendations for legislative changes, resource needs and coordinated enforcement strategies.
Campos said the task force would bring together city departments, worker advocates and responsible businesses to produce recommendations for the Board of Supervisors. He described wage theft as a persistent problem that harms workers, deprives government of tax revenue and gives unscrupulous employers an unfair advantage over law-abiding businesses.
Campos listed co-sponsors of the ordinance including Supervisor Mar, President Chu, Supervisor Kim, Supervisor Avalos and Supervisor Olague. He thanked the Progressive Workers Alliance, the Chamber of Commerce, the Golden Gate Restaurant Association and the Office of Labor Standards and Enforcement for their input during drafting.
Campos said the measure builds on the board’s previous, unanimous actions to strengthen the Office of Labor Standards’ enforcement powers. He said the task force would consider whether additional studies or research were needed and would allow stakeholders to coordinate enforcement and prevention efforts.
