Supervisors create LGBT seniors task force to study needs, sunset after 18 months

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Tuesday passed in its first reading an ordinance to establish a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) seniors task force charged with developing policy recommendations to address the needs of LGBT older adults.
Supervisor Weiner, sponsor of the ordinance, said the city has a "growing LGBT senior population" and that some members of that community face specific needs including aging with HIV, stigma in some senior programs and a higher likelihood of aging without adult children to provide care. "This legislation will create a task force that will exist and then expire after 18 months, that will formulate policy recommendations to the board of supervisors," Weiner said.
Co-sponsors included Supervisors Campos, Olague and Cohen; Campos emphasized the need for diverse community representation on the task force and for multilingual outreach to ensure broad participation. The ordinance establishes the task force's powers and duties and sets a sunset date 18 months after formation.
Without objection the ordinance passed in first reading. The task force will return to the board with recommendations per the ordinance schedule.
The ordinance does not appropriate funds in the text before the board; any future expenditures would be subject to the charter's budget and appropriation rules.
