The San Francisco Board of Supervisors handled a range of votes at its May meeting. Highlights below summarize actions the board adopted either by roll call or by unanimous consent.
Yellow Pages distribution (Item 17): The board adopted an ordinance creating a three‑year pilot to reduce wasteful distribution of Yellow Page phone directories by changing distribution practices; President Hsu argued against opt‑out approaches and in favor of an opt‑in or other limits. The roll call recorded nine ayes and one no; the ordinance is finally passed.
Litigation appropriation for Ivana Carolla case (Item 18): The board appropriated $1,900,000 from the General Fund Reserve and $360,000 from the Public Library Preservation Fund to four departments and the Mayor’s Office on Disability for litigation expenses related to an ongoing United States District Court case; the ordinance passed first reading on a recorded vote (10 ayes).
Cooper Poujeda construction management amendment (Item 19): The board approved an amendment raising the project’s construction management services amount from approximately $15,000,000 to $16,000,000 for the Laguna Honda Hospital replacement program; the resolution was adopted.
Emirates lounge lease modification (Item 20): The board authorized approval of a lease modification for a lounge at San Francisco International Airport’s international terminal; the resolution was adopted without recorded opposition.
Housing and HUD grant resolutions (Items 21–24): The board initially approved several HUD entitlement resolutions (Fell Street Apartments mortgage revenue bonds; Emergency Shelter Grants; Community Development Block Grant; HOME Investment Partnership) but then, on advice from the Mayor’s Office, rescinded votes on items 22–24 and continued those items to June 14 while the city awaits final HUD allocation. The rescind and continuance were introduced by Jason Elliott of the Mayor’s Office and the board adopted the continuance to June 14.
Medication disposal signage (Item 37): The board passed on first reading an ordinance requiring pharmacies selling prescription drugs to post information explaining safe and lawful disposal of unused medication as part of an 18‑month pilot coordinated with pharmaceutical consortiums; the vote on first reading was 10 ayes.
Appointments (Items 38–40): The board passed in first reading or confirmed several appointments including allowing an appointed former mayor to obtain full‑time city employment within 1 year after leaving office (Item 38, first reading passed), confirming Joel Ramos to the Municipal Transportation Agency board (Item 39), and confirming Doreen Woo Hoo to the Port Commission (Item 40). The MTA appointment drew several supervisors’ public endorsements of the nominee.
Other procedural actions: The board adopted numerous consent agenda items (1–14) and several additional routine resolutions and approvals noted on the agenda. Several items were continued or tabled as noted above.
Ending: Several of these items returned to committee or will return for second reading per standard legislative procedure. Where votes were rescinded or items continued, the board cited the need for additional federal allocations or statutory noticing.
