Supervisor David Chiu introduced a local ordinance at the board’s June session to increase penalties for individuals found carrying a concealed weapon or maliciously harassing others on San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) vehicles, platforms and stops.
Chiu said the proposal would raise penalties to the maximum allowable under state law, potentially increasing maximum jail time and fines within local statutory authority, with the goal of sending a stronger message about public-safety priorities on the transit network. The ordinance is intended to complement existing safety efforts by Muni, the police department and community organizations.
Chiu named co-sponsors on the legislation that include President David Chu, Eric Mar, Sophie Maxwell and Bevan Dufty and thanked colleagues for prior leadership on Muni safety. He said the proposal responds to a series of violent incidents reported on platforms and vehicles and is meant to align local penalties with the strongest measures available under state law.
There was no final vote on the measure at the June 29 meeting; it was introduced for consideration and further committee referral as required by council procedure.
