The Board on Nov. 3 adopted a resolution finding that retaining and expanding the San Francisco wholesale produce market is fiscally feasible and that environmental review can proceed for a proposed expansion project.
Supervisor Maxwell, who sponsored the resolution, said the market has been a San Francisco institution for more than a century and has occupied the Bayview Hunters Point industrial area for nearly 50 years. Maxwell described the market as "a key role within the food sector in San Francisco" and urged the city to treat the market as an asset that requires modern facilities and additional space to stay competitive.
The resolution adopts fiscal-feasibility findings required under Administrative Code Chapter 29 and allows further environmental review of a proposed expansion and a future lease. Maxwell said the proposed lease will return to the board in the coming months for additional action.
The clerk called the roll and the board voted with 11 ayes; the chair announced the resolution was adopted. Supporters said the expansion would help keep produce distribution and related jobs in the city and provide a more modern market facility.
Outcome: The board adopted the resolution finding fiscal feasibility and authorized environmental review to proceed. The proposed new lease for the market will return to the board for subsequent consideration.
