Board commends San Francisco Vegetarian Society; California Campus Compact receives recognition for $1.3M grant

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors issued a pair of commendations at the Sept. 2009 meeting, honoring the San Francisco Vegetarian Society for its work sponsoring the World Veg Festival and recognizing California Campus Compact’s receipt of a $1.3 million federal grant.

Supervisor Eric Marr introduced a commendation for the San Francisco Vegetarian Society, noting the group’s long history of public education on health, environmental and animal-welfare issues and its annual World Veg Festival in Golden Gate Park. Dixie May, president of the Vegetarian Society, accepted the recognition and invited the public to the festival, which the transcript records as free for children, seniors and students and by donation for other attendees.

Supervisor Mark Ellsberg (speaker identified in the transcript as introducing the Campus Compact commendation) invited Elaine Ikeda, executive director of California Campus Compact, to receive a certificate honoring the organization’s 20th anniversary and new initiative. Ikeda told the board that California Campus Compact had received a $1,300,000 grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service’s Learn and Serve America program to fund a Social Innovation Generation initiative to engage students and institutions in service and social entrepreneurship.

Supervisor Maxwell, who said she has been a vegetarian for decades, added a brief endorsement of the World Veg Festival. The board recessed later for scheduled commendations and concluded its in-memoriam adjournments.
