Supervisor Campos introduces resolution to reaffirm board support for Mexican Museum project amid eviction threat at Fort Mason

Supervisor Campos introduced a resolution on Tuesday reaffirming the Board of Supervisors' commitment to completing the Mexican Museum project and urging Fort Mason, the Redevelopment Agency and the Arts Commission to work with the museum's board of directors.

Campos said the redevelopment agency had released $250,000 in seed funding to help the museum begin capital-raising for construction, but the museum faces a possible eviction from Fort Mason that could jeopardize the collection and the project's timeline. "The Mexican Museum right now is facing an eviction from Fort Mason, which will be, will have a devastating impact on the completion of this project," Campos said, adding that the museum's private partner Millennium has commitments that must be met for the project to proceed.

The proposed resolution reaffirms the board’s commitment to expeditious completion of the museum, calls on Fort Mason to meet with the museum’s reconstituted board to negotiate a lease extension, and asks the Redevelopment Agency and Arts Commission to work closely with the museum to move the project forward toward its planned Yerba Buena Gardens site.

Campos said the project is of "critical significance not only to the Latino community in San Francisco, but to San Francisco as a whole," and thanked co-sponsoring supervisors for their support. The item was introduced and submitted to the board; action on the resolution will follow the regular committee or calendar process.
