Supervisors table $498,000 Mission youth violence prevention appropriation after reallocations

The Board of Supervisors tabled an ordinance (item 21) appropriating approximately $498,000 from the General Fund Reserve for high-risk youth violence prevention in the Mission District for fiscal year 2008–09 after the item’s author said most community requests had been addressed through reallocation and interagency coordination.
Supervisor Tom Ammiano, who introduced the item, told colleagues that negotiations with the Department of Children, Youth and Families, the mayor’s Office of Violence Prevention and his own office had succeeded in meeting ‘‘almost all’’ of the community-identified needs — including extended hours at Recreation and Park centers and funding for community-based organization (CBO) operating costs. Ammiano said those outcomes made the supplemental appropriation unnecessary at this time and moved to table the ordinance. He said his successor would continue to work with Supervisor Mirkarimi on the portion of the resolution remaining on the Public Safety agenda.
The motion to table was seconded by Supervisors Duffy and Elsberne and approved without objection, and the clerk recorded the item as tabled on the record.
