Board approves amendment of the whole on retiree health funding; item continued for committee review

The Board of Supervisors on Feb. 5 approved an amendment of the whole to a multi-part proposal addressing funding of retiree health benefits and adjustments to retirement benefits for new employees.
Supervisor Ellsburn introduced the amendment, co-sponsored by Mayor Gavin Newsom, President Peskin, and others, and acknowledged extensive negotiations that included the mayor—s office, the Department of Human Resources, labor unions, and the House of Labor. Ellsburn said the agreement was the result of months of negotiation and aims to address long-term funding for retiree health care while also addressing miscellaneous retirement benefits.
Board members and staff praised the multi-party negotiations; the measure was adopted by unanimous voice or without objection, and the item was continued for a public committee-of-the-whole hearing on Feb. 12 so the board can conduct a full public hearing and consider voter-submission steps.
