Board approves first-reading ordinance to create Entertainment Commission position to coordinate special events

Supporters noted the effort follows recommendations from the Controller—s Office and reflected input from the Entertainment Commission and neighborhood stakeholders. Opponents and some supervisors flagged concerns about the mayor—s hiring freeze and whether the new position would be subject to that freeze; city staff clarified that the funding for the remainder of the year is from contractual services and salary savings and that a new permanent position would be considered in the next annual budget.
The board voted to pass the ordinances on first reading (9 ayes, 2 nos). Supervisors emphasized that the position could be frozen by the mayor or controller if funding were not approved in next year—s budget and said the board retained authority to revisit or eliminate the position in subsequent budget cycles.
