The San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously approved on first reading an ordinance designating 2151 Van Ness Avenue, Saint Brigid Church, as a city landmark under Planning Code Article 10.
Supervisor Alioto Pier, sponsor of the legislation, thanked land-use committee members, neighborhood volunteers and the Academy of Art for participating in preservation planning. "This is really being done because of [Joe Dignan's] leadership," Alioto Pier said, paying tribute to the late advocate whose efforts helped advance the project.
The measure passed with a minor technical amendment clarifying architectural-character language. Several supervisors noted interest in preserving interior elements; Supervisor McGoldrick said the report and planning-commission materials detail interior significance and pledged to introduce a separate amendment to Article 10 to establish procedures for interior landmarking of privately owned buildings.
Supervisor Alioto Pier said the Academy of Art, which has purchased the building, has agreed to meet with neighbors on a proposed compact to allow community access for concerts, classes and other public uses. The ordinance as amended and read was approved on first reading unanimously.
The ordinance now proceeds to a final reading for adoption. Supervisors said they expect follow-up work to consider whether and how certain interior features might be protected in a separate process.
