Council postpones consideration of making graffiti a nuisance until October work session

Members of the Lexington Fayette Urban County Council voted on April 15 to postpone consideration of proposed code changes that would define graffiti as a public nuisance and add penalties.
The item originated in the Social Services and Public Safety Committee and had previously been recommended for approval by that committee. Councilmember Gray moved to table/postpone the section of the ordinance dealing with nuisances (section 12-2) to give colleagues time to address concerns about imposing penalties on property owners when graffiti appears. After clarifying whether a date was required, the motion was restated as a postponement to a date certain.
“I'm moving to table section 12 dash 2 regarding nuisances, until the month of '8 October of 20 25 in order to, seek, to remedy the concerns of several of my colleagues regarding setting nuisance, making graffiti a nuisance and a penalty on land on property owners,” Gray said. The council ultimately specified October 14 as the date: “Your motion then would say until October 14 work session.”
Council discussed whether tabling indefinitely or naming a date was appropriate; council members agreed to return the item to the October 14 work session for further consideration.
The postponement was approved in the work session vote and the item will return for additional review on the specified date.
