County begins multi‑year due diligence on future of Milwaukee Public Museum site at 800 W. Wells

Milwaukee County economic development staff told the committee they have begun multi‑year due diligence on the future use of the Milwaukee Public Museum site at 800 West Wells Street and have contracted consultants to evaluate development scenarios.
Celia Benton, director of economic development in the Department of Administrative Services, said the county issued a request for proposals for due diligence services in August 2024 and unanimously recommended the Graef, Bear Real Estate and CG Smith team. Benton told the committee the consultants will evaluate the property’s existing conditions, identify constraints and opportunities and prepare up to three development scenarios that consider community needs and compatibility with the City of Milwaukee’s downtown plan (2040).
Benton emphasized the site’s technical complexity: it is connected to a parking lot and an on‑ramp and will require multiple types of analysis before the county can choose a long‑term use. Final deliverables are expected before the end of the year, and no near‑term decision will be made until further analysis and public consultation occur.
