The Neighborhoods committee approved item 20 25 0218 on April 14, adding six traffic-signal and intersection projects to the city's capital improvement program (CIP) and correcting prior-year amounts on the CIP sheet.
Chris Ladue, chief of the Traffic Engineering Division, told the committee the projects were previously handled as maintenance but must now be created as named CIP projects because individual costs exceed $100,000. The projects include emergency rebuilds where poles or mast arms were damaged, several rebuilds of aging signals and one project to add a U-turn lane and signal phase, Ladue said.
Councilmember Clark Murray asked whether adding the projects would push other projects down the queue. Staff and council office representatives said the effect depends on current workload and whether construction contracts are already in place; several of the six projects are ready to move forward and were described as top priorities. Ladue said the city manages about 1,200 signals and that projects are prioritized by emergency need or maintenance backlog.
The committee approved the amendment and bill as amended by voice/ballot vote: 7 yeas, 0 nays. The clerk recorded "7 yeas, 0 nays."
