Board approves KickUp software to manage professional development and observation data

The Salt Lake City School District board approved a contract April 15 to purchase KickUp, a software platform the district will use to manage professional development, streamline registration and collect observation and coaching data.
District staff explained the platform’s two primary modules: a professional‑development catalog and registration system used for summer and school‑year offerings, and a “Foundations” observation/coaching module designed to gather non‑evaluative instructional data for grade‑ and school‑level analysis.
Staff said KickUp keeps district PD records under local control — a change they view as important after a state transition that left some past training records inaccessible — and supports job‑embedded professional learning such as co‑teaching observations, in‑class coaching and teacher reflection. Staff also described tagging and search features to help teachers quickly find sessions relevant to grade level or subject area.
Trustees asked about rollout timing, user adoption and whether the system’s session naming could create confusion. Staff said tags and search fields are the recommended method for discovery and that the district will provide user guidance and rollout timelines to avoid late availability problems experienced in a prior implementation year.
The board moved the KickUp contract from the discussion to action agenda and approved the contract on a roll‑call vote.
