Evansville Fire reports 280 applicants; schedules April 19 recruitment orientation

Chief Garrett told the Evansville Fire Merit Commission on April 8 that the department had received 280 applicants to date for the current recruitment cycle and that outreach is continuing.
Garrett said the department has a radio ad scheduled to run for two weeks beginning next week, a digital billboard running in April at Lloyd and 41, yard signs at stations and the admin building, magnets for apparatus and staff vehicles, an advertisement in the Guns and Hoses program, and distribution of flyers at an upcoming barbershop health fair. He also said the University of Evansville posted the opportunity on its student platform.
The commission confirmed a recruitment orientation event will be held April 19 at the Administration Building from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; commissioners and staff have begun planning the event and will distribute flyers and electronic copies of recruitment materials. Commissioners suggested additional low-cost public-service outlets for promotion, including the Our Times magazine and WEOA radio outreach.
Earlier in the meeting Chief Garrett reported on current academy and promotions: 11 recruits currently in the Recruit Academy scoring well, six conditional job offers issued for the next academy (scheduled to begin June 2), and several recent promotions (Kenny Woolsey to captain March 12; Jeremy Nelson to captain March 27; Tony Kirsch to captain April 3; Daryl Adler to captain April 3; Jamie Phillips to lieutenant April 4). Garrett also said the department anticipates up to five retirements before year-end that could affect staffing.
