The IRPS committee considered a resolution to establish a permanent community advisory board for the DeKalb County Police Department to advise on transparency, data sharing, crisis intervention, policy review, equity and other community-policing matters. Commissioners discussed the board’s potential role in providing quarterly data updates, reviewing initiatives such as pit maneuvers and information-sharing around Georgia State Patrol activities, and ensuring continuity across leadership changes.
Police leaders told the committee DeKalb County Police has been CALEA-accredited since 1991 and that the CALEA civilian panel process does not prescribe a permanent advisory board; the department reported it is reaccredited for an eleventh cycle. Commissioners asked the CEO to coordinate and align the proposed board with an administration task force the CEO is preparing as part of a broader public-safety strategy. Several commissioners said a temporary task force might be folded into or inform a permanent advisory board; others suggested appointing commissioners’ designees and CEO appointees to the board.
After discussion, the committee voted to defer the item to the first meeting in May (roughly a 30-day deferral) and asked staff and the administration to provide a proposed structure and clarifying language prior to returning to committee.
