Middletown Area SD honors student leaders, musicians and girls basketball team
Summary
At its April meeting, the Middletown Area School District board heard reports from student groups, recognized student-of-the-month winners and honored the girls basketball team’s successful season.
Kylie and members of Middletown Area High School’s Key Club and student council reported recent volunteer and outreach activities and asked the board to note upcoming events. Key Club hosted Senior Citizens Day on March 27 and participated in a full-day City Island volunteer event March 28; club leaders said members also will serve as buddies at a Special Olympics event at Bishop McDevitt High School and will volunteer at school activities in late April and May.
The board recognized Hope Berger and Krish Shaw as Rotary Students of the Month. High school principal Matt Fry introduced the students and invited them to address the board. Krish Shaw thanked his parents and teacher of influence, Mr. Bradford. Hope Berger described her academic pathway in human services and said she will attend Lycoming College to study psychology; she thanked her parents and teacher of influence, Mrs. Follinger. Berger also noted a personal connection to Middletown Area High School through family yearbooks.
The board presented Pride Students of the Month and read nominations from several grades. The district also introduced its girls basketball team for a season in which players and coaches received multiple regional honors, including conference player and all-star mentions. Dr. Hunter and others praised the program’s record and coaching staff, and the board presented certificates to players and coaches.
Superintendent Dr. Hunter highlighted other student achievements: high school and middle-school musical casts, students who participated in county chorus festivals, and a high school junior who performed on electric guitar at a regional modern band festival. Dr. Hunter said students in grades 3–11 will take PSSAs and Keystone exams the week after spring break, noting this will be the district’s first administration of those tests on iPads and that staff have contingency plans in case of power outages.
The recognitions and student reports were presented as informational items; no substantive policy changes or funding decisions were made during those presentations.
