McDowell High students ask county to declare May 27 ‘Hero Day’; commissioners approve

Students representing McDowell High School’s Chick-fil-A Leader Academy described two recent events—the county’s response during Hurricane Helene and a campus lockdown on Jan. 21—and asked commissioners to declare May 27 as McDowell County Hero Day to honor first responders.
Kendall Wall and other students told the board that first responders ‘‘reacted swiftly during Hurricane Helene, saving multiple lives’’ and that deputies and officers entered classrooms during the January lockdown to ensure student safety. The students said the Hero Day event, planned for May 27, would serve hot dogs and hamburgers to first responders, run a 50-50 raffle to defray costs and request donations from local businesses to provide free or discounted items to responders.
A commissioner asked for a motion to declare the day; the motion was made and seconded and passed on an oral vote. Commissioners praised the students’ presentation.
Ending Commissioners agreed to the students’ request and approved a declaration making May 27 a day to honor sheriff’s deputies, police officers, state troopers, 9-1-1 operators, EMTs, paramedics and firefighters in McDowell County. The students said the event will be an annual recognition.
