Beloit board committee clears 2025 summer school program for full-board consent

A School District of Beloit committee recommended approval Tuesday of the district’s 2025 summer school program for placement on the full board consent agenda, after administrators outlined curriculum, staffing and funding plans.

District staff explained that the program will emphasize literacy and mathematics interventions, plus wellness and enrichment, and will expand supports for students with personalized reading plans required under state statute. Staff said registration opens April 25 and will remain open through the summer; attendance is recorded daily and is used to calculate state reimbursement.

Administrators told the committee the district no longer receives a two-year ESSER competitive grant that previously helped cover summer-school expenses. Without that additional grant funding, leaders said, the program must rely on state formula reimbursements tied to instructional minutes and on existing budget lines. The district noted it has tried to limit one-time purchases and instead will prioritize replenishing materials and using more online resources.

Board members asked about enrollment tracking and funding. A staff presenter said registration counts will be shared with the board in advance of the start of sessions and again during the summer, and that final, audited attendance and reimbursement totals will be available after third-Friday reporting in September. Committee members also asked whether recently released state reimbursement opportunities—such as reimbursements tied to screening or progress monitoring tools—might apply; staff said they would investigate and follow up.

The committee unanimously moved to recommend the summer school plan to the full board for placement on the consent agenda.

Looking ahead, staff asked board members to encourage families to register and to consider attending summer-school events such as the program’s summer graduation ceremonies.
