The National City Fire Department announced it has achieved an ISO Class 1 rating, the top rating awarded by the Insurance Services Office for fire-service capability.
Fire Chief Serge Mora described the rating as an organizational milestone, noting the department scored 92.45 out of a possible 105 points across categories including emergency communications, operations, water supply and community risk reduction. Chief Mora said the department’s operation score was 43.4 out of 50 and that water-supply improvements contributed significantly to the upgrade.
Officials said investments in training, equipment and partnerships — including cooperation with the Sweetwater Authority, San Diego Metro dispatch and American Medical Response (AMR) — helped the department reach the top rating. The chief credited approximately $1.5 million in state-funded equipment purchases over the past year and the department’s on-site training tower.
City leaders congratulated firefighters at the meeting and noted the rating places the department among a small group of agencies nationally that have achieved Class 1 status; staff noted fewer than 1% of U.S. departments reach that level. Officials said the rating can reduce insurance premiums for residences and businesses, and that the department will continue community outreach and prevention work.
Council members thanked staff and firefighters for the effort and for sustained investment in training and equipment.
