Carlsbad adopts annual hazard reduction abatement for vacant parcels identified as fire risk

The City Council on April 15 adopted a resolution authorizing the Carlsbad Fire Department's hazard reduction abatement program for privately owned vacant parcels. Fire Division Chief Darcy Davidson presented the second of three annual reports on the program and described the department's parcel survey and follow-up process.
Davidson said the department completed a survey that identified 87 parcels with or likely to have potential fire hazards during the drier months. Council previously declared those parcels public nuisances on March 18; notices were mailed to property owners the following day explaining property maintenance requirements and the May 15 deadline to clear parcels. The public hearing on the item received no speakers.
The adopted resolution authorizes the city's abatement contractor to perform maintenance on parcels not cleared to city standards after the May 15 deadline. Council voted unanimously on the resolution.
