Kaufman County commissioners on Tuesday accepted a staff recommendation to negotiate a construction contract for the courthouse renovation (CSP-2501) and approved moving forward with the recommended contractor pending successful contract talks.
County staff said six general contractors responded to the request for proposals. An evaluation panel that included the district attorney, sheriff, a commissioner and other county officials shortlisted three firms, interviewed them and unanimously recommended the contractor identified in the committee's report (name transcribed as "McCaugh" in the meeting record) pending successful negotiation of final terms.
County staff said the recommended firm submitted a best-and-final offer that reduced its original proposal by $442,530 from an initial $8,401,562. County representatives said construction is scheduled to begin May 12, 2025, with an estimated completion date in April 2026. Jeff Shaw, introduced by the contractor as the on-site project manager, said his team expects to be on site throughout construction.
The court voted to proceed with contract negotiations; commissioners said they look forward to a finished product and acknowledged the county's need for additional courthouse space. County staff noted the selection is subject to successful contract negotiations and final awards. No final construction contract was signed during the meeting.
