Fridley preschool moves through IB PYP self-study; district invited to evaluators' October visit

Karen Beckstrand, the district's preschool IB Primary Years Programme coordinator, briefed the board April 15 on the Fridley preschool's self-study toward IB reauthorization.
Beckstrand said IB-authorized schools complete a self-study every five years to review implementation of IB program standards and practices and that Fridley preschool was preparing documents and data as part of that process. "Our data submission, our document submission is due June 15," she said. She described the self-study as a review of program purpose, environment, culture and teaching practices and noted the district is moving from older standards to the new IB program standards and practices.
Beckstrand highlighted accomplishments including continuity through the authorization despite the pandemic, and noted challenges such as impacts on early speech development that staff have observed after COVID-era masking and disruptions. She said the preschool is focusing on data literacy, implementing updated transdisciplinary themes and aligning early childhood PBIS (the Pyramid model) with the district. The board was told an evaluators'visit is planned for Oct. 27'28 and that board members will receive invitations to meet with evaluators.
No formal board action was recorded on the self-study presentation; Beckstrand asked the board to reflect on the preschool's purpose and to participate in the October evaluation sessions.
