Pharr to celebrate 50 years of CDBG funding; officials highlight housing assistance

Elizabeth Diaz, director of the grants department, and Pauline Coker, assistant director for grants management, invited the public to a 50th-anniversary celebration of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) on April 24 at 5:30 p.m.
Diaz said the city has received CDBG funds for 31 years (since 1994) and that the grant has supported housing and rental assistance, utility assistance, rehabilitation and reconstruction programs. She said the grant has helped more than 1,000 households in the last 10 years through these programs.
The April 24 event will be held near the food-truck area at City Hall; the city will host tables with subrecipients and community partners, provide light refreshments and small giveaways, and include cultural performances. Diaz and Coker said the event is open to the public and urged residents to attend and learn about CDBG services and the upcoming needs assessment the city must conduct as part of the grant administration.
No formal funding decisions were made at the meeting; the presentation was informational.
