Hobbs board honors state champions; CTE team, Make-A-Wish partnership spotlighted

Trustees recognized Hobbs High state champions (powerlifting and coed cheer), youth academic achievements and a CTE partnership that helped deliver a Make-A-Wish playhouse to a local child.
The Hobbs Municipal Schools Board opened its April 15 meeting with recognition of student accomplishments and a community partnership highlighted by a Make-A-Wish surprise.
Staff presented Hobbs High sophomore powerlifter Jesus Ortiz and his coach D. Lloyd Lambert to recognize Ortiz's NMAA 5A state records: a 565-pound squat, 375-pound bench and a 545-pound deadlift for a 1,485-pound total, described in the meeting as class 5A and overall state records for the weight class. The board then honored the Hobbs High NMAA 5A coed cheer team and coaches, including head coach Cassie Sudwick Weeks and assistant coaches Bea Boyle, Bridal Bej Valdez and Brittany Grights, noting multiple recent state titles and that several team members are enrolled in AP/honors classes and some will graduate with associate degrees from junior college.
Later in announcements Superintendent Strickland and staff recounted a community partnership in which CTE students and staff partnered with Make-A-Wish to construct a decorated playhouse (referred to in the meeting as a "she shed") for a 4-year-old community child recovering from brain tumors. Strickland described the event as "one of my most memorable days" and said the child returned home to find the playhouse next to the parents' home.
These presentations were ceremonial recognitions; the board did not take action beyond public acknowledgment and applause. Several board members and staff praised students, coaches and community volunteers for their accomplishments and service.
