Hobbs Municipal Schools trustees approved travel for 42 students who qualified at state SkillsUSA competitions to attend the national SkillsUSA conference in Atlanta, Georgia, during a brief discussion and vote at the April 15 board meeting.
Mr. Modest, speaking for the SkillsUSA delegation, said Hobbs produced 42 qualifying students at state competition, including 17 golds and multiple medalists. He asked the board to approve the students' travel; Superintendent Strickland said the district historically funds travel for national competitions while encouraging groups to fundraise where possible.
The board moved, seconded and approved the request by voice vote. There were no recorded roll-call tallies in the public transcript. The superintendent and staff noted the trip is a significant opportunity for students who have already won at the state level.
Direct quotation from the presentation: "We had 17 gold ... for a total of 42 medalists, who qualify for nationals." The packet notes the national conference will be held in Atlanta and the district expects to support student travel logistics through Student Activities and the Business Office.
