Encinitas Senior Citizen Commission selects Commissioner Jesse Hanwick as 2025 Senior Service Award recipient

The Encinitas Senior Citizen Commission on April 15 voted 4–1 to accept an ad hoc committee’s recommendation that Commissioner Jesse Hanwick receive the 2025 Senior Citizen Service Award.
Commissioner Ramona Angel, chair of the award ad hoc, told the commission the panel reviewed 15 nominations and "there was one individual who clearly stood out," recommending Hanwick for the award. "The documentation and depth and breadth of Jesse's volunteer service are amazing as evidenced by the impact on our community," Angel said.
Angel moved that the commission accept the ad hoc’s recommendation; Commissioner Koblen seconded. Commissioner Stern said, "My only thing is, my vote will be no," and the roll call vote recorded four yes votes and one no. The commission’s staff noted that city eligibility for the senior service award requires nominees to be at least 60 years old.
Why it matters: The Senior Citizen Service Award recognizes volunteer contributions by older adults in Encinitas. Commissioners said the ad hoc used an unbiased scoring system to evaluate nominees; staff confirmed the city does not prohibit sitting commissioners from being nominated and that nominations may come from the community.
After the vote, the commission congratulated Hanwick. Hanwick responded to the honor and thanked colleagues: in remarks after the selection he called the recognition "overwhelming" and said he appreciated community support.
The action was procedural and ceremonial; the commission did not allocate funds as part of the selection process.
