Davie County Board hires Dr. Heath Belcher as superintendent, 4-year contract

DAVIE COUNTY, N.C. — The Davie County Board of Education unanimously approved the hire of Dr. Heath Belcher as superintendent for a term from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2029.

Board Chair Potts called for a motion to hire Belcher on the terms contained in the contract and a transition agreement to be executed at the end of the meeting; board member Marie moved the motion and the board approved it by hand/voice vote, 7-0. Chair Potts said the board would execute the transition agreement at the conclusion of the meeting.

Belcher addressed the board and introduced his wife Joanna and daughter Grace, and spoke about his priorities. In the meeting, Belcher said he is “a person of faith” and described his belief that gifts and values should be used in service to the community. He also thanked board members and district staff for the opportunity and said he looked forward to working with the community and school employees.

Board member Marie read a passage from Belcher’s 48-page application describing his goals: “My goal is to ensure that the children of Davie County and their families are educated in a school system that is safe, supportive, and collaborative, has effective instruction in every classroom, and provides a guaranteed and viable curriculum,” Marie said as she read from the application.

Board members praised Belcher during the meeting and described the hiring process as thorough; several said they felt he was the clear first choice after interviews. The board did not discuss superintendent compensation details on the record beyond referring to terms contained in the contract and a transition agreement to be signed.

The board held a brief reception announcement and adjourned following the hire.
