The Holyoke City Finance Committee approved a $12,000 transfer to cover hazmat overtime and a stipend associated with adding two new hazardous-materials (HAZMAT) team members.
The fire chief explained the $5,000 portion is a stipend for two new team members and that hazmat-related expenditures are reimbursed by the state when claims are submitted. "So basically, we front load the state, we pay for it, then the state reimburses us when we submit for the reimbursement," the chief said. The chief also noted that the reimbursement flows back into the general fund.
Committee members had no objections and approved the transfer on a roll-call vote with all members recorded in favor.
The committee recorded that the transfer funds will be reimbursed to the city through the state hazmat reimbursement process.
